Lesvos is once again participating in European Mobility Week, an annual European Commission initiative running from 16 to 22 September that promotes sustainable mobility and alternative modes of transportation such as walking, cycling, and public transport.

This year, the Lesvos Cycling Club leads local efforts, coordinating a range of activities in collaboration with the Region of North Aegean, the Municipality of Mytilene, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesvos, and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest.

A key highlight is the seminar scheduled for Monday, 15 September, titled Cycling Tourism and Mountain Biking: The Case of Mytilene Municipality and Lesvos.” Hosted in the conference hall of the Ephorate of Antiquities, the seminar will introduce a comprehensive action plan for cycling infrastructure and destination positioning. The plan outlines specific proposals to promote cycling and mountain biking, aiming to integrate Lesvos into international cycling tourism networks and build a distinctive destination identity around sustainable mobility.

On Wednesday, 17 September, a public bike ride will be held, starting from Sappho Square at 20:00. Participants can choose between two routes: an urban ride through the commercial and historic centre of Mytilene, including the Castle bike path, or a mountain biking route on the trails surrounding the Ancient Theatre. Riders are required to bring helmets, lights, reflective vests, and a positive spirit.

From Friday, 19 September, to Sunday, 21 September, the Lesvos Cycling Club will host a group of 15 cyclists from Adramyti and Balıkesir (Turkey). The visit is part of an ongoing cross-border exchange, following a July 2025 visit by Lesvos cyclists to Turkey in celebration of World Bicycle Day. The weekend programme includes urban and off-road rides, cultural tours of the city, and a guided visit to the historic Mytilene Castle—one of the largest castles in the Mediterranean – currently undergoing restoration and enhancement works.

The rides with visiting cyclists are open to the local cycling community. Interested participants may contact the Lesvos Cycling Club board for full details on schedules and routes.

For tourism professionals, these initiatives highlight the growing alignment between sustainable transport, community engagement, and thematic tourism development. Lesvos’s emphasis on cycling infrastructure and soft mobility solutions positions the island as a year-round destination catering to active and eco-conscious travellers.
