Brussels Airport Maintains 85% Of Weekend Departures Despite Cyberattack Disruption

Despite the incident, the airport succeeded in operating 85% of scheduled departures on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September.

The cyberattack, which began Friday evening, affected multiple European airports that rely on Collins Aerospace systems, including Brussels, where only manual check-in and boarding processes remain available. Online check-in and self-service bag drop systems are still functional.

To manage the situation and avoid long queues or last-minute cancellations, the airport and its partners implemented several mitigation measures, including proactive flight cancellations, spreading departures over longer time windows, and deploying additional staff.

On Saturday, 25 of 234 planned outbound flights were cancelled. On Sunday, the number rose to 50 of 257 scheduled departures.

However, the disruption is set to continue. Brussels Airport has asked airlines to cancel half of all scheduled departures for Monday, 22 September, as Collins Aerospace has not yet provided a secure and updated version of the affected check-in system.

Passengers travelling on Monday are advised to check their flight status in advance and proceed to the airport only if their flight is confirmed. For Schengen flights, travellers should arrive two hours before departure; for non-Schengen flights, three hours in advance is recommended.

The airport continues to work closely with its partners and service providers to minimise disruption and restore full operations. In an official statement, Brussels Airport expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers, stressing that the disruption stems from an external provider’s cybersecurity issue.
