Adventure Travel Market Nears Trillion Dollars As Demand Diversifies Globally, Atta Report Shows

The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) has released its 2025 Adventure Travel Market Sizing Report, offering the most comprehensive analysis of outbound international travelers since 2018. Surveying nearly 5,000 travelers across 13 countries, the report highlights how adventure travel has evolved from a niche activity into one of the most dynamic sectors of global tourism.
Traditionally associated with high-adrenaline sports, adventure travel now appeals to a much broader audience. ATTA defines today’s participants as “Open to Adventure” – a group motivated by curiosity, cultural immersion, and meaningful connections with nature and local communities. Hiking, biking, and kayaking remain popular, but equal importance is placed on food experiences, local traditions, and storytelling encounters with residents.
According to the report, adventure travel now represents a market approaching one trillion dollars. Growth is accelerating, with the share of adventure-first travelers rising from 30% to 40% of the global outbound market. In total, 67% of international travelers are considered open to adventure, creating opportunities for destinations and operators to expand their reach.

Sustainability is now central to traveler decision-making. The report notes increasing demand for small-group, capped-capacity tours and activities led by locally owned businesses. This reflects a wider shift in consumer values, where travelers seek experiences that are environmentally responsible and directly benefit host communities.
Diverse traveler segments
The ATTA identifies four distinct segments within the adventure travel audience:
- Adventure Intensives – highly active travelers seeking technical or challenging activities.
- Nature Enthusiasts – those primarily motivated by landscapes, wildlife, and the outdoors.
- Cultural Explorers – travelers prioritizing history, traditions, and local connections.
- Experience Samplers – a broad group mixing light physical activities with cultural and culinary experiences.
For industry professionals, this segmentation offers a framework to better align products and marketing strategies with traveler expectations.
Luxury and bespoke experiences
Another key finding is the growth of luxury and tailor-made adventure experiences. Travelers increasingly seek curated journeys that balance comfort with immersion, a trend that signals new opportunities for high-end operators and accommodations.
ATTA’s 2025 report emphasizes that adventure travel is no longer confined to a specialist market. Its expanding definition requires destinations, tour operators, and hospitality providers to adapt their offerings to meet diverse traveler motivations. The blending of cultural, culinary, and outdoor experiences – underpinned by sustainability – positions adventure travel as a key growth driver in the global tourism economy.
