Suing Apartment Complex For Throwing All My Belongings Away
Location: Georgia
Almost two years ago apartment complex management sent a cleanup crew or whatever to clear out an abandoned unit who happened to be my neighbor. They went into mine…while I was visiting my family for Christmas (sounds unbelievable I know that’s just the kind of luck I have in my life.) They did not have a key and went in through a window.
I came home to an empty apartment, called management and it took awhile (they kept saying I was robbed, but what kinda robber is gonna take a bed from the 3rd floor?) but they finally admitted they had it cleared out. They did not want to compensate me so I ended up suing but my lawyer caused the case to be dropped because he missed the court date somehow (I am in another state now so he was to handle the court issues; he said there was no need for me to fly there) It is currently being refiled.
Realistically how much can i hit them for? They charged me for breaking the lease and I owe them $5000 still, which i cannot afford to pay right now . It affects me getting apartments and damages my credit but the lawyer says this is a separate case. I am in school and cannot afford another lawyer on top of this one. I do not want to sound selfish but I had to move states after this because I had nothing left and needed to move in with some people that could help. Not to mention the credit thing. How much can I possibly get out of them? Are there any loopholes to get more?
