Ny Tree Fell Into Neighbors Yard

Card image cap

Location: central New York area

I bought a house in January that had 5 ash trees that died when the ash beetles came by. They are dead but for the most part not overly concerning condition. Over the weekend, the wind blew one of the trees down by the roots breaking. It broke our fence and landed on our neighbors shed and roof. From what we can see, there is minimal and mostly aesthetic damage to mostly the shed and their gutter. We had a guy come deal with the tree as soon as we could and were informed by him that legally we were not liable for removing the tree from the neighbors yard but we still did when that tree and others from our yard were removed. One of the trees we decided to remove because this same neighbor said they were concerned about it potentially falling into their yard in the future even though we were not overly concerned about it because there were no significant structures around for it to damage.

Due to damage being so minimal, neither of us think it is worth going through insurance due to not/barely meeting the deductible for the costs of repair. He has not outright asked for us to pay for the damage with his roof but based on things he has said, I anticipate he will. We have even offered the spare pack of shingles we have so that the repairs would just be labor. Would I be responsible for paying his roof repairs?
