Law Firm Gave Dad Half Of What Was Promised And Now Are Saying The Person Who Told Him Lied And No Longer Works There

Location: California

So the law firm my dad has been using for his case told him about two months ago that they'd be giving him a certain amount per the settlement (this is after they claimed he would owe them a lot of money because they had messed up his case and fumbled everything saying he would have to pay back his first ever settlement with them). A month ago they called him again saying that he would be getting double what they had first told him and for the past month they've been reiterating that he will be getting his check "soon" and that it would be the amount that they said the second time.

He got his check yesterday and now they're claiming the previous Lawyer who was working on his case lied to him and no longer works there. They said he would not be getting the amount they have been promising him for the last month now. Is he essentially SOL or is there anything that he can do to get the money they said he would get?

Edit: This is in regards to a personal injury settlement, he was hit by another semi while sitting at an off ramp and the semi was going over 60mph down the ramp before hitting a car and then my father's truck and then hitting the brakes.
