I Totaled My Stepmom’s $4k Car Do I Need To Pay For The New $25k Car?

Location: Maryland This February, around 1 AM on a snowy night, I totaled my stepmom’s mid 2010 Chevy Equinox on the way to work. They told me insurance gave them $4,000 back for it. After discussing what to do, we agreed that they’d get another car and I would pay them back when they made payments for the car. Sometime that following week, they went car shopping without me. What I did NOT expect, was for them to come home with a used 2024 Chevy Equinox that’s worth $25,000. I feel taken advantage of, since there is no reason that they needed to get such a recent, and expensive car when the car I broke was almost if not over a decade old, and was under 5k. I know that if they were expecting to pay the full cost there’s no way they’d have chosen that one. I live at home with them, and this massive expense has basically made it so I cannot afford to move out on my salary for YEARS. Is there any reason that I am legally obligated to pay for this car?? Can I refuse to pay them back for this car? Can they call the police or sue me? I am 21 (20 when it happened) if that matters. Edit to add: This was a verbal agreement. I have been paying since February but I want to move out, but I can’t afford rent+600 a month for the car.
