How Do I Legally Move My Ex-boyfriend Out Of My Apartment?

Hi, I’m a 21y female, my ex is a 32y male. We have a 6m old son and we had a domestic violence relationship. We got into an argument he trashed the apartment, I moved whatever I could grab out of the house and me & my son moved in with my mom. My ex stole my keys & I currently have no access to the apartment and he has the original copy of the keys. His name is not on the lease only my name but he has been paying the rent for the past 6+ months since I’ve been a stay at home mom and not working. I’ve read on google that even if he is not on the lease it would be illegal for me to change the locks and kick his stuff out. There are also damage/holes in the apartment and it is messy, in which I want to patch & repair the damage and clean up the apartment so the leasing office doesn’t charge me additional costs for damages. How do I legally get him out the apartment? Will the court make me pay the last 6 months rent back to him because he paid the rent and not me. I just want to peacefully and safely get out this situation without affecting the funds I have for my son and putting him or me in any danger. And I’m not necessarily in the position to afford a lawyer.
