Family Member Picked Up By Ice In Atlanta While Going To Get Green Card — What Should I Do?

Card image cap

Hi everyone,

I’m really stressed and need guidance. A family member was picked up by ICE today in Atlanta while they were on their way to get their green card processed. We’re confused because everything seemed to be moving forward — they even had a valid driver’s license issued by Georgia.

One thing to note: they did miss an immigration hearing back in 2024, but we thought the situation had been getting resolved since they were able to continue their process and get a driver’s license. Now we’re not sure what this means for their case.

We don’t know what the next steps are or what we should be doing immediately.

Questions we have: • How do we find out where they were taken or if there’s a detainer? • Should we contact an immigration lawyer right away? • Can anything be done because they were actively trying to fix their status? • What documents should we start gathering? • Is bond possible in Atlanta if someone missed a previous hearing?

Any advice, resources, or personal experiences would really help. We’re scared and don’t want to take the wrong steps.

Thank you.
