Elderly Family Member Bought Pepper Spray With Id At Target. She Was A Felon Back In 2004. Didn't Realize What She Did Until After The Fact. Southern California.

Location: Los Angeles California
A close family member of mine bought pepper spray today from Target as she's been working on her health and taking long walks she's now a senior and over 60 and wanted some form of protection. Target asked for her ID and she gave it to them. She didn't realize until leaving the store that buying pepper spray is considered buying a weapon. She is a two time felon with one charge in the late 90s and one charge in 2004 due to drug usage issues. She's also a heart patient and takes heart medication daily. She is in a major panic because she thinks they will issue a warrant and charge her with buying a weapon. She immediately returned the item after realizing what she did.
What should we do? What penalty is she facing?
She's considering going to the police station and telling them what she did. I don't think this is the best option. She wants to avoid police just coming on any given day and picking her up on a warrant because of the pepper spray purchase.
Penal Code 22810 is what it looks like she violated based on what I have read online.
