Debt Collector Advice

Location: Texas

It is my understanding under FDCPA a debt collector is breaking the law when they call more than 7 times in a seven-day period.

What about 7 times in 1 - 24 hour period. For weeks and weeks.

They use multiple phone members always starting with 713-832-. With the final 4 digits in a range of 500 numbers. (Range could be even larger than 500)

My cell provider allows for number blocking but since they are calling from such a large range of numbers blocking 1 number at a time has no effect.

None of the numbers return a reverse elookup from search engines to a business. None of them allow incoming calls. System either gives a recording that the number is busy or just fails to connect.

I’m assuming the numbers are spoofed. My understanding is calls from spoofed numbers is illegal under FDCPA.

The big deal is they aren’t even looking for me. Each and every time different voices (Indian accents but not heavy) ask for “Joel”.

I have no idea who “Joel” is. More important is I DON’T CARE WHO “JOEL” IS.

I imagine someone used my number on credit either before I got it or after.

I have told them near 30 (as of now) there is no one name Joel associated NOW with this number.

At first I was very polite. After about 18 times I became down right rude and offensive. I’m making myself adjust my reaction.

I have considered the fact asking for “Joel” was a front to ask different questions to verify my id for collection (which my understand is violation also of FDCPA) OR just an out right scammer using it as an opening name for a phishing expedition.

However immediately after I say “I’ve told you XX times there is no Joel at this number” they hang up.

There is absolutely no additional questions to phish. All I get is a click.

I’ve thought about voice recording for a scam. I recognized the number patterns of I never use my natural voice. Is one reason I’ve gotten so belligerent with them.

If it was voice recording scam I feel they would have changed tactics as they obviously are not getting the recordings they need. They are reworking way too hard.
