Bill Collectors Asking Me To Pay Ex-husband's Past Due Bills

Card image cap

I recently got divorced, and my ex-husband apparently had some medical bills that he didn't pay. The bills are from January and February, 2025, and the divorce was finalized July 30th, 2025. Now debt collectors are coming after me. I was never on the bills. They were only in my ex's name. I was his emergency contact. The collections agency added me to the bills and now want me to pay them. There is a clause in the divorce decree that states that each party is responsible for his or her own debt accumulated during marriage and that the other party shall be held harmless. I believe that relieves me from the debt. I have asked my attorney about this. She said the only thing they can do is send my ex the bills, and this is considered marital debt. The collections agency referred to a law, where they sued a woman, who didn't pay her late husband's medical bills. The law states: "Every husband and wife shall be jointly and severally liable for the purchase price, if such price be stated or agreed upon at the time of purchase, and if not so stated or agreed upon, for the reasonable value of all the necessaries of life, consisting of food, clothing, and fuel purchased by either husband or wife for their family while they are living together as husband and wife." Further, "Every person with sufficient ability to provide for his or her spouse's support, or who is able to earn the means of the spouse's support, who intentionally abandons and leaves his or her spouse in a destitute condition, or who refuses or neglects to provide such spouse with necessary food, clothing, shelter or medical attendance, unless, by the spouse's misconduct, he or she is justified in abandoning the spouse or failing to so provide is guilty of a Class 6 felony." I don't see where it say anything about the other spouse being responsible for the unpaid bills of the spouse, who hasn't paid them. What should I do to get the bill collectors off my back? Do they have any authority to add me to the bills and expect me to pay them?
