Criminal Defense Attorney Wants To Talk To Me, Do I Have To?

Card image cap

Location: Washington State

Long story short, in early 2021, I was a nurse and worked for a street medicine team that served individuals with severe mental illness. One of the clients severely attacked one of our nurses, sexually and physically. It was horrible. He had recently been released from jail for the same crime but for one of our other clients and because she was so mentally unwell, I guess he got away with the most minimal of charges (despite our trying to support her in pressing charges, etc).

Today a defense attorney for this individual called me and wants to interview me about my time working with this client. I understand he has a right to an attorney and a trial but I honestly have zero interest in talking to his defense. Do I have to? I wasn't subpoenaed. This isn't court. I can brief them on my interactions and knowledge of this person. Honestly he should be a Western State Hospital for long term rehab.

What should I do? I want to honor my colleague who was assaulted. But she hasn't returned my text and it's been sometime since we even spoke.

Thanks!
