Company Charging Employees For Uniforms And Profiting From It
Hello all,
Recently a dealership I work for has changed uniform policies for employees that work in service / body shop. Currently they are having us pay for new shop shirts with company logos and pants. They are not compensating for these uniforms. All uniforms are supplied through cintas, the dealership is trying to force us to have our uniforms cleaned through cintas as well. This is payed per paycheck as a uniform cleaning charge, they will not allow us to clean our own uniforms to avoid the charge per paycheck. Also I recently found out the reason for this is because our employer is making money off of this service. I have never worked at a place that made you pay for uniforms and forced employees to have someone else clean them. On top of that they want us to sign a paper for this, I'm assuming an agreement, I haven't seen the form yet myself. My question is, is it not illegal for an employer to make a profit off of employees uniforms? I understand that it is common for auto repair shops to have uniform and cleaning services, but I never worked at a place that forced you to use the cleaning services.
