An Amazon Delivery Driver Ran Over My 12 Year Old Golden Retreiver In My Driveway. When Calling Dispatch He Was Instructed To Leave The Scene After They Laughed About The Incident. All Captured On Crystal Clear Audio And Video.
Location: Michigan
Monday night my 12 year old golden retriever was backed over by an Amazon delivery driver. I live on multiple acres and have a private driveway. The incident is all on clear video and it absolutely broke my heart to watch it as the driver proceeded to back up where it was not necessary, clip my dog with the bumper enough to make him fall over, and then continue to back up and park on one of his legs for well over a minute while he struggled to get free. When the driver eventually pulled forward my dog was able to drag himself by his front paws away from the vehicle. The driver delivered the package and saw my dog laying injured in my driveway. He then called his dispatcher who laughed about the situation and told him there was nothing he could do and then he left.
I have both audio and video of the incident backed up and available.
We took the dog to an emergency vet clinic and thankfully he is not paralyzed or going to die but did / does require significant medical care and likely a reduced quality of life for his remaining years. This is a legit miracle as the video is horrific.
I have not contacted Amazon yet nor has Amazon attempted to contact me.
We obtained a police report the following day documenting the incident.
What’s my next step?
Edit -
Thank you for the advice and well wishes everyone. It’s been a tough couple days.
A few points of clarification:
This was a branded Amazon delivery truck with an Amazon uniformed employee. I have a locally stored camera system and have secured the evidence. The video has a clean elevated look of what happened. If you knew this was going to happen you would put the camera in the position it was to capture the event.
The reason I have not yet contacted Amazon is because I have been focused on taking care of my dog. Thankfully I have the means to handle his vet bills without assistance which are approaching 10k. He has been in the hospital since Monday and just came home today. He’s unable to walk on his own but the prognosis is good that he will make a slow recovery. He’s an absolute warrior. Go give your pets a hug for me. Everyday is a gift and tomorrow won’t always be there.
I am not entirely sure what I am hoping to accomplish other than to be made whole. I understand the legal concept of pets being property regardless of how I feel about my boy. That being said, I also know Amazon doesn’t want anyone to see this video. If they take care of his vet bills I’d consider this fair from a legal perspective but then I’d also release the video for all to see as is my right.
I’m going to hopefully speak to an attorney I have used for unrelated estate matters to get an idea of my best next steps or for a referral. If anyone happens to have a recommendation of how to find an attorney who could provide advice here (I’m happy to pay for a consultation) I’m all ears.
