About Debt Living Abroad Usa.
Location: abroad
I took out 3 personal loans about two years ago to invest in my home country. I was scammed by my business partner in one of the investments, and the other one didn’t work out. I was making the loan payments until a family member became seriously ill and I had to stay in my home country. Even during that time, I continued making the payments.
During this period, I lost my legal status because I had been outside the U.S. for too long. As a result, I can no longer enter the U.S. or continue making payments on the loans. I want to pay them back, but I simply don’t have the money right now.
Does anyone have any idea what could happen? A lot of people say that being outside the U.S. makes it very difficult for creditors to do anything. I owe around $70,000 total across three personal loans, plus about $9,000 total on five credit cards.
I don’t own any property in the U.S. or in my home country, and I don’t work for a U.S.-based employer. Has anyone been in a similar situation or know what could potentially happen?
Not from reading things on Google, but from actually having been in a similar situation. I consulted a lawyer in my country who specializes in debt, and he told me that it’s almost impossible for anyone to sue me in my country over those amounts since the debt is spread across several different accounts.
I’ve never owed anyone money before, and I really don’t like being in debt, so I’m worried.
Thanks
