A Rapid Oil Changer Ruined My Truck

TL;DR – A rapid oil changer caused catastrophic damage to my truck. What are my legal options? Location: California
Took my well-maintained ‘94 Ford Ranger to Oil Changers for a routine oil change and asked them to check/top off my differential fluids. They claimed everything was full, and I declined any upsells. During service, something went wrong — oil sprayed throughout my engine bay, soaked my air filter, and filled my intake system. Techs wouldn’t explain what happened but quietly drained excess oil afterward. I demanded a refund and documentation, but was only given a refund marked as “customer unsatisfied,” not technician error.
Days later, while driving, my rear axle exploded. Upon inspection, I found the rear differential fill plug was missing — meaning it spilled out while driving which seized my axle. I’m now stuck with a disabled vehicle and major repair costs.
Do I have a legal case? What kind of lawyer should I contact, and how can I preserve my evidence effectively? Is this a small claims matter?
