Morukuru Family Madikwe Reopens Owner’s House And River House With Refreshed Interiors

Morukuru Family has announced the reopening of Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru River House at Morukuru Family Madikwe, following extensive refurbishments after flooding earlier this year. Both riverfront homesteads are once again available for bookings, alongside Morukuru Farm House, which remained fully operational throughout.

The properties were temporarily closed in February after heavy rains caused the Molatedi Dam to overflow, with the Marico River rising and damaging the interiors. Instead of simply restoring the houses, the Morukuru Family team collaborated with designer Amy Kidger of Hinterland Studio to undertake a thoughtful redesign.

“In the bush, nature teaches resilience,” says Ed Zeeman, Co-Founder and Co-Owner of Morukuru Family. “What began as a challenging event became an opening to reimagine two soulful homes. We’re delighted to welcome guests back to the properties, familiar in spirit, newly inspired in detail, and as private and flexible as ever under our Morukuru Freedom Concept.”

Kidger drew inspiration from the Tamboti trees that surround the properties, the riverine forest, and photographic artworks by Leana Clunies-Ross selected by the owners. “The brief was to create spaces that feel elevated yet effortless – alive with texture, colour, and craft, and always connected to the landscape,” Kidger, Founder of Hinterland Studio, said. “Expect a palette of ochres, rusts, deep greens, and river blues; grasscloths and woven details; patinated metalwork and natural finishes. The result is a calm and characterful backdrop to the theatre of the bush.”

Key updates include:

  • Newly refreshed interiors in both houses
  • A dedicated fitness room for guests of either house
  • Enhanced outdoor spaces designed to maximise river views and starlit dining

Morukuru Owner’s House is a two-bedroom retreat accommodating up to four guests, while Morukuru River House offers three en-suite bedrooms for up to six adults and four children. Both feature private pools, generous outdoor living areas, and can be booked together for larger gatherings. Morukuru Farm House, with five bedrooms and expansive lawns, continues to cater to multigenerational groups.

All three properties are powered by solar energy and operate on an exclusive-use basis, ensuring guests enjoy privacy and flexibility in the Madikwe landscape.
