Milan Bergamo Airport has reported a strong summer season, welcoming 4.8 million passengers between June and August 2025. The results were supported by new services, infrastructure upgrades, and rising demand across key European and international markets.

Growth across non-Schengen markets

Non-Schengen traffic rose by 1.7% year-on-year, reaching 1.05 million passengers. Egypt was a notable growth market, recording a 36% increase to 82,889 passengers. This was supported by Air Cairo’s new Sharm El Sheikh service and continued strong demand from existing leisure routes.

Bosnia and Herzegovina also saw significant growth, with passenger numbers almost doubling to 17,342 following the launch of SkyAlps’ Mostar flights and sustained demand for services to Sarajevo.

The United Arab Emirates remained one of Milan Bergamo’s fastest-growing markets. Dubai maintained stable traffic with double-daily services, while Sharjah registered a 21% increase during the summer. The UAE served as a key hub for onward connections to long-haul leisure destinations including Bangkok, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, the Maldives, Zanzibar, and Phuket.

European market performance

Spain was the leading international market for the airport this summer, while routes to Greece, Portugal, France, and Turkey also recorded strong demand throughout the three-month period.

To manage high volumes during the peak season, Milan Bergamo completed major infrastructure projects ahead of summer 2025. The check-in area was expanded, almost doubling capacity from 34 to 64 counters, including 22 self-drop units. This upgrade improved efficiency and reduced waiting times. Additionally, the new BGY EXECUTIVE facilities enhanced the experience for both scheduled and private flight passengers.

Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation, SACBO, said: “We are pleased with Milan Bergamo Airport’s performance over the peak summer months, particularly the continued growth we have seen across our non-Schengen markets. This expansion of our international network reaffirms our position as one of Italy’s busiest and most dynamic airports. The strategic investments we made in infrastructure upgrades ahead of the season, including expanded check-in facilities and enhanced passenger processing areas, have paid off, allowing us to manage high passenger volumes while ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey for travellers.”

Looking ahead, the airport is preparing for the winter 2025/26 season, with strong demand expected in the run-up to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. With modernised facilities and an expanding network, Milan Bergamo is positioned to continue supporting airlines, passengers, and the regional economy.
