Icao Strengthens Cooperation With European States On Strategic Aviation Priorities

ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar highlighted the organization’s strategic priorities during the 74th Special Meeting of the Directors General of Civil Aviation (DGCAs) of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), held in Bern, Switzerland.

In his opening remarks to the ECAC meeting, Salazar provided updates on ICAO’s global agenda, with a particular focus on the ICAO Strategic and Business Plans, the organization’s ongoing transformation, and preparations for the upcoming 42nd ICAO Assembly. He emphasized the importance of aligning European aviation policies with ICAO’s long-term Strategic Plan 2026–2050.

While in Bern, Salazar held a bilateral meeting with Swiss Federal Councillor Albert Rösti, commending Switzerland’s leadership role in civil aviation and its continued support of ICAO’s initiatives.

The Secretary General also engaged in discussions with senior European stakeholders, including Filip Cornelis, Director for Aviation at the European Commission’s DG MOVE; Florian Guillermet, Executive Director of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA); as well as representatives from Azerbaijan, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Talks addressed cooperation on ICAO’s Transformational Objective and the progress of international aviation initiatives.

Salazar was joined during his mission by Michael Gill, Director of ICAO’s Legal Affairs and External Relations Bureau, and Nicolas Rallo, ICAO’s Regional Director for Europe and the North Atlantic.

The meetings reaffirmed ICAO’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with European states and institutions in support of global aviation priorities, including safety, sustainability, and regulatory harmonization.
