Concord Hospitality, a hotel management and development company with more than 140 properties across the U.S. and Canada, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1985 by Mark Laport, the company has grown from a single Hampton Inn in Pennsylvania into one of North America’s leading third-party hotel operators, with projects spanning select-service, full-service, and luxury properties.

At the heart of Concord’s success is a strong emphasis on people. Laport established the company with a vision of building hotels with colleagues he trusted and respected, and that focus on collaboration and culture continues today.

“It’s always been about the people. Concord was born out of a collaboration amongst a group of like-minded individuals with a dream and we’ve grown exponentially thanks to the dedication and perseverance of our associates,” said Mark Laport, CEO and founder of Concord Hospitality. “In the hospitality business it’s all about the people, and if you want your team to care for the guests, you have to take care of them first.”

Retention and talent development remain central priorities. Concord highlights hospitality as one of the few industries offering genuine upward mobility, and the company has invested heavily in training and recognition programs to support career advancement. “Hospitality is one of the last few industries that offers upward mobility and that’s why at Concord we’ve placed great emphasis on edification,” said Debra Punke, Chief Human Resource Officer at Concord Hospitality. “We strive to find passionate, hard-working people and then we give them the tools and support they need to succeed and grow in this industry, and as a result, Concord grows too.”

Expanding hotel management and development

Over four decades, Concord has expanded its scope beyond select-service operations to include full-service and luxury hotels. In 2021, it launched the Opus Collection, a portfolio of independent-minded upscale and luxury properties with award-winning restaurants and bars. Food and beverage has become a significant growth area, with new outlets recently opened in markets such as Raleigh, Washington D.C., and Milwaukee, and more projects planned through 2025.

Concord also continues to work closely with major brands. It recently partnered with Marriott to launch StudioRes, a new midscale extended stay brand, underscoring its role as a trusted development partner.

Innovation through technology and procurement

Technology has become another pillar of Concord’s growth. The company has built an in-house IT team to design and manage systems for property management, revenue management, distribution, and reputation management. With the U.S. hospitality software market projected to reach $6.88 billion by 2032, Concord is positioning itself as a leader in digital transformation among third-party operators.

Procurement is another area where Concord has expanded its expertise. By developing end-to-end supply chain solutions and leveraging technology to integrate purchasing with ERP systems, the company helps properties streamline operations, control costs, and safeguard quality.

Forty years of culture and community

Concord attributes its sustained performance to five cultural cornerstones: Quality, Integrity, Community, Profitability, and Fun. These principles, the company says, have guided its associates, strengthened partnerships, and supported growth into new business areas.

From a single hotel in Pennsylvania to a portfolio of over 140 properties, Concord Hospitality’s four-decade journey reflects the evolution of a company built on people, performance, and a willingness to adapt to a changing industry landscape.
