Seattle Mariners Recall Troy Taylor, Place Trent Thornton On Il

If there is one thing that the Seattle Mariners have, other than currently holding the American League West division lead, it is pitching depth.

That depth was made evident once again on Friday, as the team was able to call up another reliever with Major League experience, after sending one to the 15-day IL.

After being optioned to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers on May 3, 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Troy Taylor was called back up to the Major Leagues while fellow right-handed pitcher Trent Thornton was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 6) with appendicitis.

Taylor was drafted by the Mariners twice out of college. The first came in the 20th round of the 2021 MLB draft, and the second in the 12th round of the 2022 MLB draft. The righty made his Major League debut on August 11, 2024, striking out two in one inning against the New York Mets.

Taylor has struggled to find consistency in his playing time and his production at the Major League level to this point, pitching to a 4.84 ERA across 22 1/3 innings in 25 games with 27 strikeouts and a 78 ERA+. This year, his ERA has ballooned to 12.00 across three innings in four games with two strikeouts and a 34 ERA+.

Thornton, 31, is in his seventh season at the Major League level. After struggling to find his footing as a starter early in his career, he has transitioned to a reliever where he has been much more servicable.

That has not been the case this year, however, as the veteran holds a 5.87 ERA across 15 1/3 innings in 16 games with 11 strikeouts and a 62 ERA+.

Taylor should slot in at the front end of the bullpen during Thornton's absence, and only be used in blowouts until he proves he can be consistently successful.
