Injuries are already stacking up at training camps across the NFL, and many of them in "freak" circumstances.

Detroit Lions third-year running back Sione Vaki was one of the latest victims. Vaki broke his nose on Monday, Aug. 3, the first day of padded practice at Lions training camp. He went down with an apparent eye injury on the second play of team drills, according to the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed the full extent of Vaki's injury when speaking to reporters on Aug. 4.

"Got poked in the eye. Broken nose," Campbell said Tuesday. "He's just gonna need a minute here. It was just one of those freak things. Somehow, a hand gets through the facemask. It was unbelievable."

Campbell also said the Lions are "hopeful" Vaki's vision would be alright long-term.

Vaki's injury is a tough blow for the 2024 fourth-round pick. After his contributions were largely limited to special teams in his first two seasons, the third-year was set to take more practice reps on offense with Lions starting running back Jahmyr Gibbs holding in for an extension. Instead, Vaki will miss time with his injured eye and broken nose.

Vaki was one of two players to suffer a notable injury in the Lions' first padded practice of the year. Tight end Anthony Firkser, who signed with Detroit for a third stint on July 31, broke his fibula on Aug. 3. The Lions placed him on injured reserve on Aug. 4.
