What Am I Allowed To Request In Small Claims Court?

Card image cap

Location: East Tennessee

Hi all, I’m not too familiar with how any of this works and am quite shaken up so please bare with me. I had a rental unit in East TN from 06/23 to the end of this month (10/25). My fiance and I moved out early (end of August) to go back home to Minnesota. We still did our due diligence in making our monthly rent payments and discontinued utilities when moving out. To keep a long story short, the rental company is demanding money that exceeds what they can request per our lease. We have communicated over email informing them they can either keep our security deposit (which is more than they deserve) or we will take them to court. We got back a nasty email as well as them attempting to bluff and intimidate us. It seems the legal route is our only option to settle with these people. From my understanding, since their practice is in Tennessee, I need to go back there to file this in small claims court. However, in the “amount requested” section, is it normal/ reasonable to request the cost of travel and hotel incurred by going there to file and attend court? I’m an unemployed college student so I’d rather not burden those costs if I don’t have to. I’m just not sure what my limitations are. TIA.
