Township Assessor Claims We Do Not Own Land We Purchased 2 Years Ago, Due To Township Error. Should We Pursue Legal Action?

Location: Northern Michigan
Met with our township assessor who requested we meet to discuss our property taxes. They informed us that the 2 acres of land that is in the legal description of the property we purchased is not on the Tax Assessment role. Instead just 1 acre is on the roll. Their solution is that the property be split into 1 acre lot and 2 half acre lots, where we will be entitled to just the 1 acre lot which appears on the older legal description that is in the tax roll. They informed us that they don't have a deed to support the full 2 acres which we purchased and that we never actually owned the full 2 acres. The original owners of those 2 half acres are deceased, so the township's plan is to turn it over to the state, where they informed us we might have the chance to buy it.
The original owner of the property, owned 1 acre when he purchased it in 2004, but when his mother passed away in 2016, his family split the surrounding land and deeded him the other 2 half acre lots. The township informed us of all this, so I'm not sure how they claim to not have record of it.
We purchased the land from him in 2023 with 2 acres. The title confirmed it was 2 acres based on the legal description, which I believe was retrieved from the township. Why would the township provide a legal description for a property that they don't have a deed for? The whole thing feels a bit suspicious. Any advice?
