Tow Company Refused To Take A Card In California

Card image cap

Location: Oceanside, California.

My car was in the process of being towed but had not left the parking lot. The guy said they would only take cash to release the vehicle and not a debit or credit card.

From my short “research”, it is california law that tow companies must accept cards. This company is notorious for only accepting cash. Am I incorrect for thinking this is an illegal practice?

And just to clarify. This was to release the vehicle from the truck before it had been towed. Not me picking up the car from the companies storage lot and paying at the physical office. I couldnt find any info for the requirement of taking card for this situation.

I didnt want to pay cash because thats what scammers want. And my credit card does not allow me to withdraw cash from atms. I also wanted a proper paper trail for myself. I had to have a friend bring me cash.

Another thing. (Not to be a nitpicking ass) The tow truck did not have legible information for the company on the left side. Hence me thinking he was a scammer at first until I saw the proper info on the other side of the truck. Edit: I believe it is a legal requirement to have the info clearly on both sides of the truck.

Their excuse was that their card reader was out of service.

Do I have any legal recourse here?
