Surprise $1,000 Bill For Extra Allergy Tests I Never Okayed—anything I Can Do?

Hi all,

I’m in New York City and just got slammed with a bill for $1,080 from my allergist. Here’s what happened:

I scheduled a initial visit for seasonal allergies.
The doctor did a standard skin-prick test; it showed I’m allergic to oak.
Without any real discussion, he immediately moved on to a second round of testing 20 separate intradermal injections “to be thorough.” I wasn’t told what they were, how much they’d cost, or that they were optional. I didn’t object at the time because I assumed it was part of the visit and honestly didn’t know what was happening until after the fact.
My insurance EOB came back and these extra injections weren’t fully covered, leaving me on the hook for the $1,000+ balance.

Is there anything I can do dispute the charges for lack of informed consent, appeal to insurance, negotiate with the provider, etc. to get this reduced? Any specific NY laws (or federal surprise-billing rules) that might help here?
