Squatter Got Arrested And I Need To Clean Up The Land!
Location: San Bernardino, CA
Hello fellow reddit users, hopefully your days been doing great (unlike mine ????), I really need your wisdom and advice on my case, I’m basically like a blank paper when it comes to laws and compliance so any advice will be helpful.
So here is brief background of the story, my father bought the land in San Bernardino, CA several years ago hoping that he can set up a mobile home to move in. Unfortunately, he passed away because of the cancer during the Covid era, before he could set up everything and since then the land has been abandoned as a vacant property. I am listed as a co-owner of the property so I been paying the property tax every year, but that’s about it, I don’t have any extra money to start any project on that property yet.
Recently I received a letter from the county, a Notice of Violation, that there is some camping/occupancy of temporary structure or vehicle(RV trailer) - a squatter. I immediately contacted sheriff’s department and they confirmed that whoever was occupying the land has been arrested couple days ago (with some other crime he committed) and currently there’s no one on the property. Which left me with huge RV trailer that I don’t know the name of the owner nor any information on the vehicle. I live in Seattle, which physically I can’t go down in California in time (30days until the correction) to take care of the situation, and even if I get there I do not know the process of removing someone else’s property out of my property without violating any laws that I’m not aware of.
I heard from the DMV that Lien Sales unit does not take care of the abandoned vehicles and I need to contact the private towing company to remove the vehicle- I’ve been calling around but it seems like not a lot of towing companies have the equipment to tow a RV trailer; is there a way to find which towing company are eligible to tow a RV trailer other than me calling individual towing companies? And even if I tow RV away, I’ll be still need to clean up camping site and some kind of a shed/hut that the squatter had set up.
My question will be:
Is there any towing company who can tow a abandoned RV trailer? How can I find them? Do I need to know any information of the vehicle before submitting request to tow? If so, how can I get that information? Would contacting sheriff’s office will be able to provide those information since the squatter got arrested?
How can I get rid of squatter’s belongings (such as shed/hut and camping tent? Am I allowed to call junk removal company and throw away everything?
How can I stay safe while doing the cleaning? I heard that I can ask for safety check on the property but is the officer going to be staying while I clean up the place? - I’m asking this question because the location of the property is in pretty remote area and I’m just a very tiny little asian lady… I’m afraid of getting kidnapped or get killed.
I’ve been laid off from my job since end of April - I live day to day basis, I do not own any much of savings so if I can spend minimum as possible, it will be great.
I do want to follow the order and correct any violations but I just don’t know where to start…
