Social Security And My Evil Stepfather

Card image cap

Location: (Lancaster) Los Angeles County, California. Hi all this is a bit of a long story! When I was 17 (March 2020) my mom died. At that same time my stepdad had applied for I believe it’s called survivors benefits. My stepdad also kicked me out 3 months (unsure when exactly this was) later after moving in the woman he was cheating on my mom with while still collecting benefits. I turned 18 June 2020 after he had kicked me out I moved back in for a brief time after crashing at friends for about a couple months I believe this was at the end of 2020 going into 2021 then was kicked out again (he has anger issues and would beat me when drunk so if I stood up to him it was straight out the door) This was I’m going to say late January 2021 (he kept letting me back because of the amount of benefits he got when I was living with him which never stopped because I never left for TOO long). I tried moving in with my dad after getting kicked out the third time but he’s a drug addict who happens to be the same type of abuser as my stepdad so after about 2 months I moved in with the same friend who was letting me crash at his place again. Then around April 2021 I moved back in with my stepdad again.. again I SWEAR IT WAS THE BETTER OPTION THERE WAS FOOD during this brief time of stable housing I had worked my ass off to graduate high school online (May 2021) since I was not going in person anymore (he let me live there but that’s about it no help with anything whatsoever). Anyway benefits should of stopped since I had turned 18 and/or graduated high school (I turned 18 in June 2020 and graduated in May 2021) graduated a bit late but what can you do when you’re homeless lol. Then DURING may right after I graduated literally days before my birthday I went over to my girlfriends house I decided to stay the night there (asked my stepdad if I could do this he said yes also I’m 18 so thought it was a non issue) when I woke up in the morning I woke up to a message saying that now that I have a place to live I’m kicked out and all my stuff was waiting at the door.. outside of my room. I called my stepdad to no answer and no answer again and said what the actual?? fuck?? He basically just said since I spend so much time at my girlfriends and spent the night there it must be a place where I can stay that’s safer than my friends (my friend had a mess for parents not getting into this situation) and dads and I should leave now well actually I HAD to leave now. That’s essentially the end. I moved in with my girlfriend on her farm and that was it with him. Never spoke to him again. Nothing. He moved to Texas. Then at the ripe age of 20 right before I turned 21 so March 2022? I get a piece of mail stating I’m still claiming social security and I haven’t paid any taxes on it.. what. I didn’t even know he had claimed anything for me or got any benefits for me at this time. I called him and he refused to answer. Finally I call the woman he cheated on my mom with (they got married the first time I got kicked out) and she answers calls me by the evil nickname they called me (I swear this is literally out of a movie) and asks what I need. I tell her that he owes taxes on this money and she basically tells me to fuck off until I mention getting the court involved. (I also didn’t know at this time that HE SHOULD NOT have still been getting money for me) after a week he says he paid the taxes and never wants to speak to me again (This man is a fire fighter with millions in savings so actually.. what?) I moved on he did pay them that was that. Now I am 23 and it is October. Well all those months? Years? Who knows how long he was claiming benefits he should not have had gotten back to ME. Just got a form from Social Security saying to pay back $1700 in overpaid benefits. What can/should I do?
