Safeco Failed To Cancel The Policy On Time And I Was Being Charged For Months.
Location: MI
I was with Safeco on my old car, and when it broke down, I bought a new car and went with a different insurance for it. I didn’t get to cancel the insurance instantly in March as I was expecting to fix that car and sell it off, which didn’t happen till June. I called and asked to cancel the policy effective immediately, then the agent said she can offer me the refund since February as I didn’t use the car at all. I sent out the documents needed. I thought it was canceled. I’m an international college student and am busy with a lot on my shoulder. I didn’t realize I was still being charged till the month of October.
I know I should’ve checked, but it was on my credit card, and I was really dumb enough to not double-check the statement. I immediately called them again to cancel. The guy said they never received the request earlier. Mind you, I have the email thread from what the previous agent sent me to forward (which I did). The guy said it was my responsibility to double-check if the cancellation, which I requested to be “effective immediately”. He even mentioned they can’t issue the refund for more than 30 days.
Can I sue Safeco for this? What can I do in this situation? Please guide me.
