Property Line Issues

Location: South Dakota

I’ll try to make this as short as possible. We live in a part if town that has a pond along the backyards, therefore all houses have kept their backyards open without fences for decades. Over the last few years, we have continued to have issues with our neighbors intruding our privacy, when asked to respect our boundaries, they ignore it, etc. After about two years of us, trying to give them a chance, we have concluded we need to have a fence put up. Our houses were built in the 50s and we had no idea where the property lines were. We had a Surveyor come out and mark, just to find out. They had sprinklers on our property line, and planted some bushes (mainly weeds now) and a tree on our side of the line. Shortly after the survey was done, they dug out their sprinklers and transplanted their trees, leaving holes in my yard. They did replace the sod with sod from their yard that they dug up that very quickly died, but did not fill in these holes at all. My question is, because it’s on my property, Is this my problem? Are they responsible to repair this? They have been very difficult to deal with and after the last confrontation where the husband actually started to lose control (he has two other police reports from other neighbors for disorderly conduct) I would rather not confront them if not necessary. Thanks for any advice!
