Passport Taken By Airport Staff

Card image cap

Location: Houston, TX

Context: Non-US Citizen with valid visa leaving the country.

While attempting to board the flight, I tried to scan my ticket and give my passport to the airport agent that’s there to verify my identity.

The boarding pass turned out to be blocked. The agent said she wanted to check something. She took my passport and went away with it. A few minutes later she comes back with some customs agents who have dogs and it turned out that they have my passport now.

They asked me to step into the gate and started hounding me with questions with a very stern tone while the dogs were sniffing me. I guess they thought I was a cash mule or something. The situation was mildly stressful because I had no idea wtf is going on. They eventually let me go.

Is this airport staff agent allowed to take my passport just like that without asking for any consent? Do I have any rights in this situation? I do realize I gave her my passport for an ID check but not for her to take it away! What if these people just decided to arrest me… I literally lost the proof of my identity at that time.
