My Moms Ex-boyfriend Just Came Back To Our House, And Was Banging Unstopped Until We Answered The Door

It just happened and hour or so ago, I woke up to the sound of very loud banging, thinking it was my brother doing something downstairs, I called out but he didn’t answer. From there I kinda assumed what I was, but forced it to the back of my mind. I opened the door to my brothers room to find him also getting up, we rush downstairs, and for whatever reason, I don’t know why, but I opened the front door. I wasn’t too surprised when I saw my mom’s ex. He kept asking if my mom was there (she wasn’t) and if she had a new boyfriend (she does), I kinda froze before asking what he was doing here, I never answered any of his questions, mostly just saying what, and ‘you know better than this.’ My brother ended the interaction by just shutting the door, before my mom’s ex left, loud enough to hear from the closed door, said I’ll be back. From there I kinda freaked out, I immediately ran upstairs to my moms room to look out her window because it faces the the front of the house and street, watched him drive off, after he sat on his phone for a few seconds. I immediately called my mom, told her what happened and she let me know she was calling the cops. From then on it was a lot of waiting, waiting for her to update us,once she did, she let us know that they’d be sending a sherif to talk to us. Then we had to wait 30 mins or so for them to get here, once they did, they kinda just asked what happened, asked where my mom was, and said that he’d call her back and push her to get a restraining order. I’m probably gonna get picked up by my dad in a few hours, so I won’t be here for a while. I know really the only thing my mom can do is file a restraining order, but I was wondering if I could do something, I don’t know, I’m just afraid for her, and don’t want her to get hurt. They were on and off for about 3-4 years, he was abusive to her, mentally for sure but I could never 100% confirm physical. I knew from the moment I met the guy that he was bad news, but whenever I begged my mom to leave him, they’d break up, then a few weeks later I’d come back from my dads and he’s just chillin on the couch. I know it’s not right to blame my mom, so I don’t, but I know for a fact that this could’ve been done with sooner. The last time i remember seeing him was last year in the summer, he dropped me off at work, then they broke up, and this time it seemed for real, especially after she found a new guy, who’s miles better.
