My Bar Guest Got A Dui

Card image cap

Location: Georgia

Yesterday, I walked into my PM shift and noticed a visibly intoxicated woman sitting at my bar. The AM bartender let me know she came in looking sober, had one martini and then became visibly intoxicated.

I have the woman a water and avoided her because I did not feel comfortable serving her. She ended up getting into a verbal screaming match with other bar guests. I was very busy & immediately notified my manager so he could de-escalate the situation. She got up, fell over, & left the restaurant. I noticed her walking back and forth in the parking lot. I think she forgot where she had parked her car.

I sent my manager to go out there & offer her a taxi ride home. He called me & asked me to come outside. When I got out there she was sitting in her running car with my manger holding her car door open. He tossed me her car keys & told me to call 911. Police officers arrived & conducted field sobriety test. She was arrested for a dui. I gave the officers her keys.

When I returned to the bar (all my bar guest saw everything unfold), a regular told me to pray that she wouldn’t sue me. He said I could be sued for kidnapping because I had her keys & she couldn’t leave. Is that something she could do? I’m 23 & working a second job as a bartender to pay off my student loans fast. I cannot afford a lawsuit. Is this something I should worry about?
