My Apartment Is Uninhabitable And Refusing To Break My Lease
Location: Connecticut. I moved into an apartment less than three weeks ago and immediately saw evidence of a cockroach infestation. On my second night in the apartment, a cockroach crawled across my arm while I was sleeping. It is clear that this was a known issue--reviews of the apartment complex dating back two months ago complain of persistent pest issues (cockroaches and mice) that go unaddressed despite complaints to leasing office. When I first entered my unit, there was a horrible smell. I complained to the leasing office and they told me maintenance had just sprinkled powder on my carpet and that's probably what I was smelling. After seeing a few live roaches, I called maintenance and they came and sprinkled boric acid in my apartment. It was immediately clear this is what I had been smelling. There were also traps in the trash room and a trap that came out from under my fridge when maintenance came. Other residents on the floor above me indicate they have had serious cockroach issues since April. It is a building wide problem that was not disclosed to me prior to moving in; however, my leasing office will not allow me to break my lease. They state they have been responding to every complaint and addressing the issue. How can I get out of this apartment? I have not slept in the apartment since the cockroach crawled on me. I also have a cat so this poses health concerns for her.
