Mom Is Not Letting Me Have Access To My Momey
Location: Rhode Island I (21f) I need some advice on what to do in this type of situation. For some backstory Since I was 14 I have been working and up until around 15/16 (can’t really remember) my mother would take my checks and put them in a savings account and I would only be aloud to a check once a month. After Covid she let me have my checks because I was buying my own food and products myself but she would still make me put a some money in the savings account along with paying for my phone bill and and helping with the electricity bill, ( I live with my aunt brother and mother and we split the bill). When I turned 18 my mother had me start paying rent (around 300-400 monthly and I would give my mom the rent money divided up every week, right now I pay 115.50 a week to my mother but it was different every year depending on how much the utilities in the how went up, such as winter I will be paying more because she will be putting the heat on so we divide the gas bill among the 3 of us because my aunt is barely home), and still have to give my mom some money to put into my savings.
Now that I’m 21 living with my mom has gotten to be too much so I’m planning on moving out soon and have started saving money to get an apartment. I asked my mother when I do move out can I have access to that savings account to help with costs such as rent, utilities, and furniture because rent prices are crazy right now and I only make enough to barley get by. She said no that that money is for my future. I told her moving out is apart of my future n the amount of money I have saved up will help me out with being on my own for the first time. She still said no that I would blow the money the second I have access to it.
Here’s what I need help with, I have no idea how much is in that savings account or even if I an co-signed or anything because it was made when I first started working and I have not been aloud to touch it since. I don’t even have the atm card. I was told by a co worker that if I go the bank and give them my info they can tell me if I have access to the account. What I’m worried about is if my name is not on the account and I can’t access it what do I do after that? Moving probably won’t happen until late next year but that money would help me a lot once I have an apartment. I don’t want access to the money now only when I’m already moved out and have rented an apartment. Would it be wrong to just take the atm card and just take my money? I don’t want to have to go to court or something with her but i might have to. Can she legally not let me have access to the money I have work for since I was 14? Sorry if this is really long I wanted to get in as much info as I could.
