Legal Suppressor Possession In Oregon After Hush Act?

Card image cap

I'm expecting ATF approval for a suppressor I bought, and I'll likely get the tax stamp before the Hearing Protection Act (HUSH Act) passes. After I have the suppressor and documentation, I plan to move to Oregon, which currently bans civilian suppressor possession under ORS 166.272.

However, that statute does have an exemption: “A peace officer may not arrest or charge a person… if the person has in the person’s immediate possession documentation showing that the person has registered the firearms silencer as required under federal law.”

So here’s my question:

If I lawfully register the suppressor under federal law before the HUSH Act passes — and carry that paperwork with me — will I still be protected under ORS 166.272(3) even after federal registration is no longer required?

The statute uses the phrase “has registered” (past tense), not “is registered” or “is required to be registered,” which seems to imply prior action for compliance is sufficient.

Would Oregon law enforcement or courts still honor that paperwork post-HUSH, or would I be at risk of arrest because no current registration system exists?

Any insight (especially from attorneys familiar with Oregon law or NFA items) is appreciated.
