Illinois Apartment Is Cold
Location: Illinois
I rent currently and moved in about a year ago and discovered my main floor (there are 2) is almost unbearable. My main floor starts on the second floor.
The temperature difference is wild. On good days it will be 72 upstairs and low 60s downstairs.
These are the series of events:
- Moved in early December '24
- Realized this problem exists
- Covered giant window with plastic wrap
- Called maintenance and had them block of of the vents so more air would hopefully flow to the main floor
- Called maintenance and had them replace the door draft object that was already there. This is for the door leading to the deck. They said beyond that there is nothing else they can do to help regulate the cold.
- I bought thermal curtains
- Summer came and then I realized the light comes through the door leading to the deck.
- Called maintenance and let them know prior to freezing temps. They came and readjusted the door and told me I need a new door but it will take a while (this was about two weeks ago as of this writing)
- Spoke with property manager shortly after recent maintenance visit and she said it may take a bit to get done
- Outside temp was in low 20s last night. Upstairs was about 72 and downstairs was 67, but at the floor level it is 57. In the span of a little over 5ft the temperature on the same floor drops 10 degrees.
I am going to call them today, but I truly worry about what to do if it gets colder. I have looked up Illinois tenant rights, but any advice would be great. I feel I have done a lot to try and remedy this situation so far.
