I Was Paid Severance Even Though I Quit

Location: New York City

This is a new one to me. A couple months back I was informed by my company that my role was being moved to another state. I was told I could move with the job or be let go. If I were to be let go I was going to be given a severance package. I was given a month to make my decision.

I wasn’t keen on moving to another state so I opted to shop around. I humored another role within the company but eventually found something much better outside the firm and decided to take that. I put in my 2 weeks and started my new job.

Now I’d assumed that my severance package was waved because I’d essentially quit but today I checked my bank account and bam. My old company had despised my severance into my account (less taxes of course). Now I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to spend it in case this was all a big mistake. Do I contact my old company to see what happened? Do I just sit tight? I have no idea how these things work so any advice would be great
