I Lived In Employer Provided Housing Where Rent Was Deducted From My Check Even Though The Lease I Signed Said Rent Would Be $0

Location: Texas
I worked for a company that had a housing option. It was a discounted apartment on the property where I worked. The rent was $300 per month.
When I signed the lease, it has the rent as $0.00. I signed this in early 2024. In the middle of this year they asked me to sign a new copy of the lease and it had the correct amount of $300.
From the time I signed the first lease the deduction was made from my paychecks each month.
In my termination email from the company I was sent the original lease I signed. I looked it over and noticed that the District Manager digitally signed it and also added $300 to where the rent spot was but over the $0.00.
It's very obvious it was done digitally after it was signed. The resolution of the lease is clearly a scan of a printed document while the "$300" on it is high res from being added in the PDF.
I am under the impression that modifying something like that is illegal and according to texas law no deductions can be made without written consent.
Since I signed a lease that said $0.00 was what they did wrong? Should I try and get a refund for the 15 or so months of rent that was deducted technically without my written consent?
