I Have My Brother On My Car Insurance. Could This Be Bad For Me?

Card image cap

Location: Arizona

My big brother was the problem child. Drugs, then getting a girl pregnant young then went to jail but got out before his son was born... Rough life with a total of 3 kids later...

His wife left him and abandoned the kids for the second time. He was driving around with no car insurance, because he can't afford it. A cop even let him off once when he got pulled over for a tail light (he didn't find it worth it to fine him when he can't afford his bills, I was shocked). I've always been the more responsible one and try to help him, I put him on my car insurance because of anything happens I can't afford to help him anymore. His oldest son is living with me, I bought him a car and am teaching him to drive.

I want the best for them. My brother is working at the same company as me, he's not been using for a few years and is doing well. I don't believe he will use, but he still drinks. If something goes horribly wrong and he's on my insurance plan could I be liable for my it? My dad said it could ruin me.

I just want to help him recover and see him get better without more consequences that he can't afford. It was years ago when using meth was a problem for him, he started again a handful of years ago and has been clean, again, for a few years. He's really trying to do right but can't afford anything since his wife bailed. We had to disperse his family between my place and my sister's.

What could I do if having him on my car insurance is too risky?
