Hoa Board Member Suing For Defamation

Card image cap

There is a lot to this story but I'm going to try to summarize. At the HOA annual meeting, my partner (who is NOT on the board) stood up and requested an emergency motion added to the agenda to discuss a recent mailing by an HOA member up for reelection. They expressed concerns about the member misrepresenting the mailing as official board info rather than as a private homeowner. In the mailing she badmouthed the recent proposition for rules changes and the board itself as well as called for herself to be reelected. She lost- 4 positions were open and 5 ppl ran. She got 22 votes out of 50 and 9 of those were proxy votes she held herself. She's suing for defamation and defamation per se. I believe this is an anti-SLAPP law violation, but we still have to get a lawyer to help file the response so it's written properly. Along with any input or opinions, I am also looking for advice on how to find affordable legal advice rather than paying a big retainer. We want to countersue but just for her to cover our legal fees. Location: Minnesota
