Help! - Insurance Negligence, Or, Identity Theft??

Card image cap

What’s up fellas and friends,

My fiancé and I are trying to buy our first home. We hit a snag when the lender pulled my credit report, which showed a debt from my car insurance company that was sent to collections. Awooga!

We checked in with the customer service at my car insurance company, and they pointed back to an account that was opened in a state that I have never lived in, at a time when I was definitely not in that state. The person who opened this account (and subsequently lapsed on the payment) was definitely not me. But they may share my name.

They say that they have a driver’s license from the state (where I have never lived) on file, for this person.

We need to get this straightened out, in order to move forward with the home purchase thing.

I am wondering, is there any situation in which my car insurance company is liable or at fault here? It seems possible to me that they have made some kind of clerical error, perhaps based on the commonness of my name.

What would you do in this situation?

Location: Minneapolis
