Friend’s Family Member Killed Her Dog Last Night (nj)

Location: New Jersey

Yesterday a close friend and her husband had to attend a wedding and left their one year old french bulldog in the care of her stepfather.
During the wedding her husband received a text that the dog was injured and he was on the way to a local veterinary hospital- he took the dog to a local vet where the dog succumbed to her injuries and passed away. The stepfather told the vet that he thought maybe the dog was attacked by another animal or hit by a car.
My friend and her husband thought something else was up and proceeded to immediately leave the wedding and bring the passed away dog to another vet for a full X-ray where they confirmed there was a metal bullet in the dog’s face and this is what led to the dogs injuries.

My friend is absolutely heartbroken and is currently letting the police handle things the next few days and is starting to come up with a plan. She is unsure what her rights are legally on handling this.

Other noteworthy things - she immediately got a restraining order against the stepfather, all of his weapons in the house have been seized, and the stepfather is also currently on the run/in hiding. Police seem to be actively working with her is getting justice at this time.

Is there any good advice anyone can give here on what avenue’s her and her husband legally should take handling this?
