Former Roommate Accusing Us Of Stealing Items We Don’t Have, Now Threatening Us. What Should We Do? (utah)

Location: Utah My husband and I (asylum seekers) lived with another family in Utah for about 2.5 years. We recently moved out and took only our own belongings - everything we bought over the years and can prove we purchased.

A couple of days after we left, one of the people we lived with began accusing us of taking items that belonged to her deceased brother (and saying that a lot of stuff is missing). She won’t tell us exactly what items she claims are missing (just a list of random categories of things) and she didn’t check anything while we were moving out. She waited days before making accusations.

Not wanting to fight with her, we returned every gift we ever received from them (for holidays or souvenirs), the only things we own now is what we bought ourselves or what we came to the country with.

She is now threatening us, demanding money, and claiming she has “proof” even though we never took anything (I guess she’s referring to the video from outside cameras of us leaving with our stuff). She’s saying to wait for her to come with the sheriff and take whatever she likes from our home, demanding to replace the broken items (random items we never even saw), threatening to get us deported even before the court date etc.

My questions: What will actually happen if she goes to the sheriff about this? Can we get in trouble if we genuinely didn’t take anything? What should we do to protect ourselves legally? Should we file an incident report for the threats? Will this cause problems for anyone? What happens in small claims court in Utah if someone files without evidence?

We are feeling very anxious and want to handle this the right way. Any advice on the correct legal steps would be appreciated.
