Family Member Was Fired From A Job And Subsequently Stole Their Entire Internal Client And Prospect Database - Potential Lawsuit

Family member was fired from a job and unfortunately to our families shock we discovered that he stole their entire client and prospect database of over 100k people. He mass emailed them and it resulted in two or three clients actually signing up for paid work.
The company appears to be aware of his actions and have confronted him but he has ignored them.
I am concerned with a lot of things mainly being we are supporting him financially temporarily while we discovered this and this seems like something that could end up with serious consequences.
I am not sure about noncompetes, the companies structure and what rules and regulations could be in place but because enough people from the mailing list reached out about this, the specific combination of people pretty much confirms he stole their data.
Also not sure if this would be strictly a civil and financial crime or criminal law, entire situation has my stomach in knots and I’m very upset and afraid this is happening
