Ex Husband Threatening Police Report Over Traded In Phone Location: Ny

As short as possible: My very recent ex-husband (legally done as of August ‘25) gave me his phone a couple of years ago as I needed a new one, wasn’t stoked about new offerings and he wasn’t crazy about the phone and wanted a new drop. The phone was linked to my iCloud account as (my) phone and he finished paying it off voluntarily.

It has been paid off for some time but also deteriorating significantly performance wise, and in an effort to get off our “family plan” I have been communicating with ex re releasing my number and getting a new phone. Did so yesterday and he was actively involved in the release of my #. Hours later, he messaged asking how we were “going to deal” with old phone; I traded it in. He is now saying he is going to file a police report; I offered to pay initial purchase cost ($1000, about $900 more than current retail value) and purchase him a similar model off eBay for his “museum” in an effort to make him whole/just stop this nonsense. He declined and demanded I go try to undo the trade in to recover this specific phone.

There were no issues attempting to trade the phone in and again, it was linked to my account. He is saying that the carrier is going to remove the financing of the new phone as I was not the legal owner of the device.

I am calling my lawyer in the AM to get in front of this nonsense but just in case- what outcomes may I be looking at here? Feels like nothing more than an attempted power grab. Happy to share any more necessary info.
