Divorce Paperwork Filed On 10/24 But Was Not Properly Served.

My friend's husband filed the necessary paperwork to begin divorce proceedings on 10/24, but instead of having her served dropped off a manilla folder at her office which was then placed in her mailbox that she cannot recall precisely the last time she checked, she found it in her mailbox yesterday. At this point we're at 19 days of which our understanding is she has 20 days to respond since he filed but she has no way of knowing when he dropped it off.
Some quick Google searching suggests that that 20 day countdown would not apply because she was not served properly but she is stressed out because he only requested assets he would like and did not include any of their debts so a default judgement could potentially be devastating.
Also thanks to Google, I did advise her to not confirm that the documents were received, but at this point there's no real clear answers to what she should do at this point.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
