Could I Sue My Ex For Destroying My Income And Leaving Me Financially Stranded?
Location: SoFlo I (29F) am in a situation that feels unreal, and I genuinely don’t know if I’m overreacting or if I have grounds to take legal action. I’ll lay out the timeline as clearly as I can.
Earlier this year, my longterm partner unexpectedly passed away, and it flipped my entire life upside down. I suddenly became the fulltime guardian for my two godkids (both minors), and financially I was barely hanging on. I lost my job shortly after, and the only consistent income I had was from streaming (similar to tiktok screaming but mildly suggestive. I had a small but loyal following (about 30k followers), and it helped me keep the bills paid while I tried to stabilize everything.
A few months after the loss, I met my now-ex, “K.” Things moved fast, he was intense, supportive at first, and very insistent on taking care of me financially so I could “heal.” I was hesitant because I wanted to keep streaming, but he repeatedly told me he didn’t want me doing it and that he would cover everything until I “figured out something else" because he "couldn't be with someone who did that kind of thing)
I didn’t love the dynamic, but I was exhausted and grieving and agreed temporarily.
What I didn’t expect was how controlling he would become. He went through my phone constantly, monitored what I was doing online, and made comments about how he “didn’t like” my streaming career. The point where everything crossed the line was the day he grabbed my phone during an argument and (in a fit of jealousy) deleted my entire streaming account. 30k followers gone. My only income gone.
I had no savings left, no backup plan, and now no platform because he wiped it out.
After that, I was essentially fully dependent on him financially (which he encouraged.) He said he wanted to be “the provider.” So I let him help with bills for a few weeks because I literally had no way to make money anymore.
Fast-forward to now: He’s suddenly saying he “can’t afford my life,” wants to leave, and is packing up to go back home less than a month after he made me financially dependent on him and destroyed the only income stream I had.
Meanwhile, I’m still raising two kids alone, in the same financial crisis he helped create but now wants to walk away from.
I don’t want revenge. I’m not trying to “ruin” him. But he did destroy my work/business and the only income I had, then bailed when it became inconvenient for him.
Do I have grounds to sue someone for intentionally deleting my online business and deliberately making me financially dependent on them, only to abandon me weeks later? Or is this just a horrible relationship I need to move on from?
I genuinely don’t know if this is legally actionable or just emotionally awful. Any advice or perspective would help.
