Car Sell Gone Wrong

Card image cap

I recently sold my car in a private sale. :location: California When the buyers came to see it, I told them there were no issues that I was aware of and mentioned a few things I had replaced on the car. They didn’t ask many detailed questions.

The couple looked at the car, took it for a short test drive, and within about 30 minutes made an offer. I had it listed for $5,800, and they offered $5,000 in cash. The next day, we signed the title, completed the paperwork, and the sale was finalized.

About 24 hours after the sale, they texted me saying they had taken the car to a mechanic who told them it needed $2,800 in repairs. I immediately responded, apologized, and told them I had no idea the car needed that work. I offered to void the sale and refund them the full $5,000 they had paid.

They said they had already paid for the repairs and sent me a copy of the invoice and told me they expect me to pay for the cost of bringing the car to “driving standard.”

I feel really bad about the situation, I did not know the car needed work but they never contacted me before authorizing the work. They didn’t give me the chance to discuss options or resolve it another way they just went ahead with repairs and are now demanding payment.

Am I legally required to pay them for those repairs? Do they have a strong case if they decide to take me to small claims court if I refuse to pay for the repairs?
